Meritorious Unit Commendation
The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the
MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION to
USS RICHARD B. ANDERSON (DD-786)
for service as set forth in the following
For meritorious service from 1 December 1971 to 30 August 1972 as a unit of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group SEVENTH Fleet during combat operations against the enemy. During this period the USS RICHARD B. ANDERSON provided outstanding support in the execution of varied operations, including contingency operations in the Indian Ocean and naval gunfire support in Southeast Asia. As a unit of Task Force SEVENTYFOUR in the Indian Ocean, ANDERSON steamed for fifty-two days straight without missing a single commitment. As one of the first units on the scene after the invasion by the North Vietnamese in March, ANDERSON took part in Freedom Train strikes in the North, and gunline operations to the South. Although the men of ANDERSON operated under extremely arduous conditions, including intense hostile fire, the ship made an important contribution toward slowing the enemy offensive. Her reputation for sustained, accurate and timely fire placed her in constant
demand for close support for friendly troops. The teamwork, professional leadership and the devotion to duty of the officers and men of USS RICHARD B. ANDERSON reflected great credit upon themselves and their ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
