Disclaimer: Card Captor Sakura doesn't belong to me. I will be using the Japanese names of the characters until I find an actual use for the names Nelvana decided to make. This short story takes place near the end of the CCS series, as Eriol prepares to leave back for England. (Mind you, I haven't actually seen most of the last season . . . so I don't know what I'm writing here. I just couldn't get this idea out of my head.)
Um, I'm gonna write Ruby Moon with feminine pronouns, simply because he/she/it looks more like a girl and I don't want to refer to Ruby Moon/Nakuru as an "it" simply because he/she/it is not human. *_*

"Singing Telegram"
"Thank you for inviting me to come along, Tomoyo-chan," eleven-year-old Kinomoto Sakura smiled as she led the way down the street.
Daidouji Tomoyo giggled softly, for once not carrying around one of her video cameras. "I think Hiiragizawa-kun deserves something for putting up with us this whole time. Even if it's just a song."
Sakura smiled at her best friend, brushing at her clothes as they approached the house that Eriol resided in. "I think it's a great choice," she remarked. The two young girls stood on the front step together, Sakura reaching up and tapping on the door.
The door was answered by Ruby Moon, in her false form of Akizuki Nakuru. She smiled widely at the two, hugging them sporadically before disappearing back into the house. "Eriol! Your cute little friends are here!" The disguised Moon Guardian winked at the two, then left to see to the kitchen.
Only a few moments passed before Hiiragizawa Eriol appeared at the door, dressed in light slacks and a dark blue turtleneck and smiling that same strangely-serene smile of his. "Ohayo gozaimasu, Sakura-san, Daidouji-san," he greeted formally. "What can I do for you this Sunday morning?"
The young Card Mistress smiled elatedly. "We wanted to do something for you, since you said you're planning to go back to England soon," she explained.
Eriol blinked, pleasantly surprised. "Sou desu ka?" he murmured.
"A singing telegram!" Tomoyo cleared her throat, nodding at Sakura to do the same. Together, they began to sing a song in English.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away"
The dark-haired half-reincarnation of Clow Reed laughed lightly at the song, smiling appreciatively. "Arigato," he thanked. "Your voices harmonize beautifully. You have no idea how happy you've made me."
Sakura continued to smile brightly, glancing down at her watch. "H-- Hooeeeee!" she gasped, eyes practically bugging out and causing Eriol and Tomoyo to stare. "I have to meet Syaoran-kun in five minutes!"
Tomoyo and Eriol shared a laugh at the brunette's expense. "You better get going then, Sakura-chan!" her best friend sighed. The two watched as Sakura made her goodbyes and sprinted down the road, a cloud of dust appearing in her wake.
Eriol calmly adjusted his glasses, his eyes resting on the dark-haired girl before him. He shut the door behind him, gesturing the girl to follow him into his garden. ". . . I have to wonder, Daidouji-san, as to why you chose that particular song," he commented. "Do you know the other lyrics?"
"There are other lyrics?" queried Tomoyo in response, blinking pale violet eyes in surprise.
Nodding, the dark-eyed boy began to sing.
"The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried
I'll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another
You'll regret it all someday"
Tomoyo took in the English words quietly and translated what she knew, eyes widening as she realized what Eriol was hinting at. A pang of heartache struck her. ". . . How did you know?" she whispered.
"You forget who I am," replied the child sorcerer. "I'm very surprised with you, Daidouji-san; you show a great amount of maturity to let Sakura-san go."
The girl nodded slowly, brushing a hand through her long, silky hair. "As long as she's happy, I'm happy."
"Are you?" Eriol pressed gently.
". . . No." Tomoyo tried her best to smile. "But what else can I do? Sakura-chan's my best friend, and I love her too much to leave her unhappy. I'd sacrifice everything for her happiness."
"Even when it's not with you."
Another sigh. ". . . Even when it's not with me," she agreed.
"Well, may I help you find a bit of happiness?" queried the boy with wire-framed glasses, smiling sweetly. When Tomoyo looked at him questioningly, he said, "A singing telegram."
"The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried;
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away"
She didn't quite understand why, but tears were beginning to well in her eyes. Blinking them back, Tomoyo joined in song.
"I'll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another
You'll regret it all someday
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
. . . Please don't take my sunshine away"
Brushing away her tears, Tomoyo looked at the dark-haired boy with vibrant eyes. ". . . Is there any way I can convince you to not leave, Hiiragizawa-kun?"
Eriol glanced away, his smile dying a little. "I'm afraid not," he replied. Upon seeing the sorrowful look crossing the girl's face, he added, "I'll come back, though."
"You promise?"
He looked at her, his eyes warm and truthful. "I promise."
Tomoyo held that promise next to her heart after Eriol left for England.
* * * * *
Fifteen-year-old Daidouji Tomoyo set down her teacup, sorting through the huge amount of letters that had piled up. Most of the letters were from boys hoping to woo her into dating them, but her personal shrewdness allowed her to see right through them. Dumping most of mail into a nearby wastebasket, the young teenager began to leaf through the remaining mail -- the actual mail, consisting of bills and meaningful letters. . .
"Tomoyo-sama?"
Slightly distracted by a letter from Mizuki-sensei, Tomoyo looked up at one of the many maids in the Daidouji manor. "Yes?"
"There's a young man at the door. He said he wanted to give you something."
Tomoyo scowled, folding the letter in her hands carefully. "Is it another of person with chocolates and flowers?"
"Actually, no. He said something about a telegram, though. . ."
That caught Tomoyo's attention. Standing up abruptly, the beautiful girl strode past her mother's maid and hurried for the door. Finding the door open already, Tomoyo stepped out onto the front steps and got a good look at the telegram boy.
He was a tall fellow; taller than her, taller than Li-kun, even taller than Yamazaki-kun. His hair was dark -- like black satin, shiny in the spring sunlight. Dark blue eyes as deep as the oceans gleamed quietly behind wire-framed glasses, each with its own little smile for her. He dressed with formal style, in white slacks and a black jacket. A familiar smile lighted on the teenage boy's face upon seeing Tomoyo.
"Ah, Daidouji-san, you're as lovely as ever," remarked the handsome boy, hands clasped behind his back. "Today, I bring you a singing telegram from a lonely little English boy that wants a chance at a young lady's heart. . ."
"The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried;
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
I'll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another
You'll regret it all someday
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away"
". . . Hiiragizawa-kun. . ."
Tomoyo crossed the small gap between her and the boy, and threw her arms around her. Eriol's arms were immediately around her, his chin resting in her hair as he ended the song.
"Please don't take my sunshine away. . ."
~ End ~
Yes, I know that Tomoyo is supposed to be the singer in CCS, not Eriol. . . But I couldn't help thinking about Eriol singing! Oh, and if I knew where "You Are My Sunshine" originated, I would give whoever wrote it the proper credit. Sorry. ^^;;;
